DIBRUGARH, Aug 5 � The city witnessed a massive protest today where hundreds of demonstrators from different parts of the district marched towards the office of the Deputy Commissioner (DC) to register their protest against government�s failure to solve the flood and erosion problem in Rohomoria and its adjoining areas.
The demonstration led by All Dibrugarh District Students� Union (ADDSU) was joined by more than twenty organisations including bodies from Marwari, Bhojpuri, Bengalee and Tea garden working communities. Other organisations included Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad, All Assam Mottock Yuva Chatra Sanmilan, All Assam Mising Students� Union, Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad, Tai Ahom Students� Union, Gorkha Students Union, All Assam Sonowal Kachari Students� Union, All Assam Bengalee Yuva Chatra Federation, Rohmoria Erosion Resistance Struggle Forum and All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Students� Union.
The protestors who had assembled at the Old Governments Boy�s School ground walked under the scorching sun from the venue to the office of the Deputy Commissioner. The police, however, prevented the protestors from advancing and stopped them near the Chowkidinghee ground. Police had set bamboo barricades at both ends of the approach Mancotta road near the DC�s office. The demonstration had brought the traffic to a sudden halt as the Mancotta road remained blocked by the protestors for nearly two hours. Rituparna Baruah, assistant general secretary, who addressed the gathering at the venue lambasted the State and Central government for failing to protect the life and property of the people from recurring flood and erosion problem. The protestors who held banners and placards also raised slogans against Water Resources Minister Prithibi Majhi.
The leaders of various organisations taking part in the demonstration later submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the district administration, seeking immediate attention to the erosion problem in the district. Police facilitated the meeting of only the leaders with the Deputy Commissioner at later�s office. The demonstrators later dispersed peacefully.
