MIRZA, Dec 15 Giving a boost to the anti-distillery movement in Rampur area of Palasbari constituency, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti secretary, Akhil Gogoi has publicly announced his organisations support to the cause of lakhs of people.
From today onwards, you are no longer alone in your fight. KMSS has joined hands with the anti-distillery agitation, Gogoi said, attending a public meet at Rampur HS School playground. He called upon all concerned to come forward to foil the exploitative and destructive design of NV Distillery and Breweries Pvt Ltd which has been given official nod to operate in an ecologically sensitive area.
Livelihood of lakhs of people would be in peril once the aquatic bodies like Dara Beel and Kulshi river get polluted with the coming up the distillery unit on the bank of Dara Beel, predicted the KMSS leader. He was emphatic on mass participation in the movement and was of the view that the entire area would be put to shame if the distillery was allowed to be set up.
Another speaker Prof Deven Dutta dwelt at length on the rich natural resources of South Kamrup area. Instead of augmenting the fish output by harnessing the aquatic bodies, the latter are left untapped, the public activist opined.
Dr Surya Kalita of Assam Science Society, dramatist Maina Goswami, Debojit Choudhury and senior journalist S Kalita made brief speeches.
The public meet, the objective of which was explained by Umesh Kalita, was presided over by Ashwani Mazumdar. Earlier, thousands of people including elderly women staged a rally. Akhil Gogoi and Anil Boro inspected the site of the distillery.
