Talking to mediapersons, ABSU president Promod Boro said that ABSU will complete its 50 glorious years on February 15, 2017. ABSU, a social and non-political organisation was formed on February 15, 1967 at Kokrajhar Tribal Rest House. It was formed with the vision to unite the students of various Bodo groups living in different parts of the world and to bring them under an organisation for better and mutual understanding to safeguard and develop the socio-economic field, culture, tradition, language and literature of the great Bodo nationality, he said.

He also said that to commemorate its 50 glorious years with letter and spirit, ABSU is celebrating a year-long jubilee with meaningful, productive and colourful programmes which will be started from January 1 with installation of written milestones in every village.

ABSU is aware of the significance of a mascot to convey its special message to the world as a representative figure, a symbol and a communication tool to help them stand out in the crowd. Hence, ABSU has adopted honey bee as its mascot for the golden jubilee celebration and this charming mascot has been christened Birgwsri, he said adding that to project a united, vibrant, progressive and respected organisation, eager to reclaim the past glory of Bodos as the master race, ABSU is inspired to march from the front as spiritedly as the industrious honey bee.

Briefing mediapersons about the mascot, Boro said that Birgwsri, the mascot of the golden jubilee celebration of ABSU is seated on the spherical digit zero of the number 50 which may be taken as a dynamism and driving forward. It is waving ABSUs flag of deep yellow colour signifying the Bodos belonging to the great Mongolian stock. The flag in the mid-point bears a symbol of shield and armour with a pair of cross swords in black signifying the Bodos as the heroic nation, he said.

Promod Boro further said that the mascot for golden jubilee celebration of ABSU has been named Birgwsri to depict the heroism of Birgwsri, the great Bodo warrior, who died fighting for the people during the early period of 19th century.

It may be mentioned here that brisk preparation are on to celebrate the golden jubilee of ABSU in Kokrajhar town from February 12 to February 15 next. A strong reception committee has already been formed with Dr Subung Basumatary as chairman and Yamow Jwhwlao Brahma as convener.
