Mary Kom, Jayanta, 6 others conferred ASJA Awards

GUWAHATI, Dec 29 � Five times world women boxing champion and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awardee MC Mary Kom, world champion archer Arjuna Award winner Jayanta Talukdar, promising boxer Shiva Thapa along with six other sportspersons were honoured by the Assam Sports Journalists Association (ASJA) with various trophies and cash awards in a function at Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium here today.

Mary Kom received the Dinesh Goswami Memorial Award as the best sportsperson of the North East while Jayanta was given the Dr Mamud Hussain Memorial Trophy as best non-resident Assam player.

Shiva was presented the Gopinath Bordoloi Memorial Award being selected by the State sports scribes as best sportsperson of the State. All the three sportspersons were presented cash of Rs 10,000 along with trophies and other gifts.

Along with them, footballer Alen Deori (Nripendra Narayan Bhattacharyya Memorial Trophy as best junior boy) shuttler Ashmita Chaliha (Saifuddin Ahmed Memorial Award as best junior girl) lawnball player Tania Choudhury (RG Baruah Award as most promising player), Jilendra Brahma, (award presented by Dr S Dasgupta as best footballer of the State) and Dwijendra Mohan Sarma (award presented by Manoj Patra as best football referee of the State) were also honoured on the occasion. All these awardees were presented cash of Rs 5,000 along with trophies and gifts.

Veteran sportspersons Pulin Das and Nripendra Narayan Singha were felicitated on the occasion for their lifetime dedication for the cause of Assam sports. Singha, however, could not turn for the function.

Organisers Hemanta Kalita, manager of Indian boxing team to last Asiad, Pranamika Bora assistant coach, Renubala Chanu, gold medallist in CWG weightlifting and Joymati Singha, coach of the Indian sepak takraw team in the Asian Games were also honoured by the organisers.

State Sports Minister Bharat Chandra Narah was the chief guest in the function where Rekibuddin Ahmed, member secretary of SLAC, Pradip Hazarika, Director General of Sports Authority of Assam, Sanjib Gohain Baruah, Director of Sports, Subhash Basumatary, Director in-charge of SAI city centre, former Santosh Trophy player Dr Sarat Dutta, Assam Cricket Association secretary Bikash Baruah, journalist Premadhar Sharma and Bolin Bordoloi were present as guests and gave away different awards.

Speaking on the occasion, Sports Minister Narah said sports should be encouraged by the Government. He rued the fact that in India, monetary allocation to sports is negligible. He hoped the State Government will definitely put more emphasis on developing sports by providing good infrastructure and other facilities to sportspersons.

Speaking on the occasion, Mary Kom, Jayanta and Shiva thanked the organisers and promised to bring more laurels to the country and the region. The function was anchored by journalist Sanjib Sarma Thakur where ASJA secretary Saurabh Bora welcomed the gathering.
