SILCHAR, May 20 � In sync with the rest of the Barak Valley, people in Silchar came out in large numbers to observe the Language Martyrs� Day on Tuesday. Floral tributes were paid at martyr columns spread across various parts of the town. Also people under different sociocultural organisations brought out rallies displaying placards with the names of the 11 martyrs� who laid their lives in 1961 for the cause of their mother tongue.

The main function of the day was held at Gandhi Bag Shaheed Mandir and Silchar Railway Station. The district administrations of Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj had declared the day as a half-holiday as a mark of respect to the martyrs�.

A CD Unnisher Dak was released and a blood donation camp was organised by the Barak Valley Voluntary Blood Donors Association for the needy and poor who are in need of blood frequently. In Assam University Silchar, tributes were paid to the martyrs�. The department of Physics organised a brief function to observe the day.

Besides this, the students and staff members of the department also celebrated the Rabindra Jayanti. A poet�s conclave was also organised by the students in the memory of Ramendu Bhattacharjee, the former Pro Vice Chancellor of the university.
