By Our Bureau

DIBRUGARH, May 16 - Half a dozen organisations, led by the Assam Movement Martyrs & Sufferers Coordination Committee today staged a well attended demonstration in front of the BCPL administrative office at Lepetkata here, demanding that a fit Assamese technocrat be appointed as managing director of the gas cracker unit. The industry is an outcome of the Assam Agitation, where 855 students and others were killed by the state, and later declared as martyrs.

Those who participated in the demonstration from 11 am to 2 pm included the Asom Andolan Sangrami Mancha, Ahom Royal Youth Federation, and Asom Native Trade and Commerce Development Association. A memorandum was later sent out to the Prime Minister of India, highlighting the agitators demands.

Parag Jyoti Baruah of the Asom Andolan Sangrami Mancha said the gas cracker must have a person from Assam as the BCPL managing director. He added that this person of course will have to be adequately qualified having met all the necessary credential requirements. Baruah felt there is no dearth of such persons in Assam.

The others who spoke during the three-hour demonstration included Uttam Kumar Baruah of the trade association, Sasanka Neog, Biju Khan and Amal Gohain of the Sangrami Mancha, Biswaram Kurmi and Nandeswar Das from the martyrs families, among others.

BCPL manager PK Mati received a memorandum from the agitators. He is said to have assured the people that the company is committed to growth of the local economy.
