Marathon to promote spirit of unity, nationalism

GUWAHATI, Jan 21 - The Red Horns Division of the Indian Army conducted �Rashtriya Ekta Mini Marathon� in Nehru Stadium here today to promote the spirit of unity and nationalism in the run-up to Republic Day.

The event witnessed participation by citizens of different age groups from all walks of life. A total of 1,130 men, 368 women, 1,112 students and 70 senior citizens participated in the event. The mini marathon started from Nehru Stadium and went along GS Road till Ganeshguri flyover and then back to Nehru Stadium.

The event was conducted in four categories, i.e., men (16 to 50 years) - 10 km, women (16 to 50 years) - 5 km, students (8 to 15 years) - 4 km and seniors (above 50 years) - 2 km respectively.

The run was flagged off by Major General Arun Kumar Verma, GOC 51 Sub Area, Pabitra Khaund, Director of Sports and Youth Welfare, Govt of Assam, Ranuj Borkotoky, Joint Director of Sports and Youth Welfare, and PVSLN Murthy, Chief General Manager, North East Circle, State Bank of India.

Sportspersons of international repute were invited for the event, prominent among them being eminent sportspersons Jayant Talukdar and Bhogeswar Baruah. The prizes included cash awards and trophies to the first three positions in all four categories. Apart from this, medals and certificates were presented to each participant.
