Many SSA schools in Meghalaya with only single digit enrolment

By Newmai News

SHILLONG, March 14 - There are many SSA schools in Meghalaya which have only single digit enrolment of students and where the teacher-pupil ratio is 1:30, as per information provided by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui here on Wednesday.

Replying in the Assembly, Rymbui said that this is why the State Government is presently in the process of rationalising the placement of teachers in the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) schools in the State.

We are in the process to rationalise the teachers in the SSA schools so that resources of the government are not wasted, Rymbui said. He further informed that there are 395 lower primary schools with 808 teachers and 508 upper primary schools with 1,874 teachers.

While raising a supplementary question, Congress legislator from Mahendraganj Dikkanchi D Shira said that there are two or three schools being set up within 1-2 kilometres when Rymbui informed that as per norms, a lower primary school should be within 1 km and upper primary school should be within 3 km from a village.

Congress MLA from Nongpoh Mayralborn Syiem, meanwhile, wanted to know if the government has any plans to allow private schools with good enrolment for availing SSA grants. On this, Rymbui said the effort of streamlining the system is still in the planning stage. He also highlighted a few preliminary steps proposed to be taken by the government which include GSI mapping of all schools.
