Manipuri bodies sit-in over council demand

By CITY CORRESPONDENT

GUWAHATI, Dec 28 - The All Assam Manipuri Youths Association (AAMYA) along with various civil society organisations including Manipuri National Council, staged a sit-in demonstration at Dispur Last Gate here today demanding a Manipuri Autonomous Council for the indigenous Manipuris of Assam.

A memorandum was sent to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in this regard today.

The demands of the Manipuris of Assam have been suppressed and neglected by the successive governments over the years. The association had submitted memoranda to the government in 2018 and in September this year but no action has been initiated yet. We also submitted memoranda to the Prime Minister and the President in November this year, said AAMYA chief adviser Kundal Singha.

An autonomous council is the only way to address the problems and save the community from extinction in Assam, he added.

We would like to draw your kind and serious attention to the previous memo which elaborately pointed out our history, culture and our present socio-economic and political deprivations which have practically pushed us to the limit of non-existence without democratic rights in a democratic state of Assam. Crossing this limit unheard, unattended and unaddressed by the Government of Assam may invite undesirable reactions from the Manipuri people living in Assam, they mentioned in the memorandum. The association threatened to intensify the protest if its demand is not fulfilled.
