Manipur women call for lifting of blockade

By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, Aug 20 A woman society in Manipur has appealed to the Naga women societies particularly the mothers of the United Naga Council (UNC) Manipur and All Naga Students Association Manipur (ANSAM) leaders to convince their wards from imposing frequent economic blockade on the National Highways.

The Nupilal and Khongjom War Memorial Societys leaders said frequent imposition of economic blockade on Highways have caused suffering to all sections of the society.

The 20-day economic blockade being imposed by the UNC soon after the 69 day blockade was lifted in June has multiplied the woes of the people of both the hills and the valley who have been already reeling under severe hardships due to acute scarcity of all essential commodities.

The ongoing blockade will last till August 23.

The Societys secretary Y Indrani appealed to the striking body to pursue their demands through other means. She expressed unhappyness over the Naga women societies silence while people are facing hardships due to the blockade on the National Highways in Manipur.

She also urged the state government to bring the agitating bodies to the negotiating table and end the blockade before things worsen.

Meanwhile, on Thursday unidentified armed miscreants torched two trucks in Manipurs Tamenglong district sector of blockade hit National Highway 53 (Imphal-Silchar).

Two drivers and one conductor were injured while wind shields of more than 20 trucks were reported damaged when unidentified miscreants stoned a convoy of around 75 goods laden trucks between Mao and Senapati sector of the NH 39 in Senapati district on their way to Imphal.

More than 200 Manipur- bound goods trucks were reportedly stranded near Kohima due to heavy landslide near Kohima.
