Manipur villagers enforce indefinite bandh

By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, May 1 Angry Manipur villagers have imposed an indefinite bandh on the Imphal-Ukhrul road today demanding immediate arrest and punishment of miscreants who damaged more than two dozen houses and shops besides looting valuable items.

The decision to call the indefinite bandh was reportedly taken at a public meeting of villagers of Gwaltabi and its neighbouring villages, sources said.

The sources said, many vehicles passing the Gwaltabi village and its nearby areas were attacked with stones by suspected bandh supporters.

On Thursday night, several houses and shops in Gwaltabi, located about 30 km east of Imphal on the Imphal-Ukhrul road were damaged by a group of miscreants.

The incident took place following a misunderstanding between supporters of bandh called by All Tribal Chiefs Forum Manipur demanding full payment of funds under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the Gwaltabi villagers over blocking of the road.

The villagers are also demanding compensation for the properties lost and suspension of police officers for their alleged failure to control the situation.
