Manipur varsity teachers stage sit in

By The Assam Tribune

IMPHAL, June 11 - Demanding immediate intervention into the ongoing situation in the University, the Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) staged a sit in protest at its Canchipur campus near here on Monday.

Braving the seasonal drizzling, many members of MUTA who teach in the varsity, participated in the sit in by displaying placards which read, MUTA stands for administrative transparency, MUTA denounce VC of MU for not respecting MUTA, MUTA seeks immediate intervention of Universitys Visitor.

The functioning of Manipur University continued to be paralysed since June 6 after Manipur University Students Union enforced an indefinite shutdown, demanding immediate replacement of the university Vice Chancellor, Adya Prasad Pandey.

The Students Union had initially shut down the Administrative Block from May 31. But the agitation has since intensified alleging that the VC has failed to take any initiative for the development of the institution as he is always out of the State.

Meanwhile, responding to queries by reporters, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said he had talked with Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar. He assured that a solution would emerge after he takes MUSUs demand to New Delhi within this week. He also informed that he had talked with MUSU and appealled to them not to vitiate academic atmosphere of the university.

Meanwhile, VC of Manipur University has formed a committee of senior professors and senior deans of Manipur University to negotiate with MUSU, according to an official statement. Correspondent
