Manipur top cop shoots at self, hospitalised

IMPHAL, July 18 - A top Manipur Police officer allegedly shot at himself with his service revolver here this afternoon, officials said. The bullet reportedly hit the officer�s chin. The reason behind the incident could not be immediately ascertained.

The injured officer is Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Arvind Kumar, who is a 1992 batch IPS officer of the Manipur cadre.

The incident took place at Kumar�s official quarters here around 1.30 pm, sources said. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Manipur Chief Secretary Dr J Suresh Babu and the top brass of Manipur Police, including Additional Director General of Police L Kailun, IGPs Clay Khongsai and K Jayenta, DIGs Themthing and Mamta Wahengbam, and SPs rushed to the hospital where Kumar is being treated.

Later, Dr Suresh Babu told reporters waiting at the hospital entrance that �it was an unfortunate incident�.

The Chief Secretary, however, said that the injured officer is conscious and responsive. Kumar will be shifted to Delhi once his condition is stable, Dr Suresh Babu added.
