Manipur to build 20-30 houses in each flood-affected constituency

IMPHAL, June 20 - Ministers and MLAs in Manipur belonging to BJP have decided to immediately begin construction of 20 to 30 houses worth Rs 1.5 lakh each in each Assembly constituency by using their local area development funds to meet the needs of the flood-affected people.

A high level meeting attended by Ministers and ruling party MLAs numbering around 40 with Chief Minister N Biren Singh in the chair has taken a decision in this regard, official sources said on Wednesday.

The flood in Manipur has damaged 23,463 houses in ten districts, affecting a population of 2.28 lakh in 269 villages. About 50,372 people are taking shelter in 155 relief camps across the State. The flood has so far claimed eight lives, according to Directorate of Relief and Disaster Management. The deluge has also damaged 4,167 hectares of agricultural land.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister said that the State Government has already submitted a preliminary report on flood to the Central Government. He was speaking to media while receiving 500 numbers of 5-kg LPG cylinders worth Rs 6.82 lakh donated to CM�s Relief Fund here on Tuesday evening.

�The government has been putting in all possible effort to help, rescue and rehabilitate the flood affected people,� he said and appreciated different organisations for donating cash and in kind to the CM�s Relief Fund and Governor�s Relief Fund. He also expressed happiness over IOCL�s move to contribute Rs 50 lakh for construction of women�s washrooms near community ponds under �Go to Village� mission.

He also informed that normal traffic movement on NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam Road) has been restored.
