Manipur student body bans functioning of DM varsity

By Newmai News

IMPHAL, June 24 - All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) on Sunday imposed a ban on the functioning of Dhanamanjuri (DM) University. It also announced a ban on counselling of first semester students for post graduate studies due to commence from today.

The ban on all activities of the university will continue until and unless the university becomes a full-fledged university, AMSU president Peter Laishram announced at a press conference here on Sunday.

DM University came into existence under The Dhanamanjuri University Act, 2017 which was passed by the Manipur Assembly and came into force on April 6, 2018. It was established under the National Scheme of Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA). DM College of Arts, DM College of Commerce, DM College of Science, GP Womens College and LMS Law College are the constituents of the university. The universitys academic session had commenced last year, but it is yet to function as a full-fledged university, Laishram said.

The university is also yet to be a member of the Association Indian Universities (AIU), and as such, the students passing out from the university will not be recognised by other institutions, he added.

The AMSU president alleged that the university was functioning only for the namesake, with no regular vice-chancellor and registrar. The university has no academic council and deans, which is a must for a university, he pointed out.

The AMSU president warned that if the State Government and other concerned authorities still remain silent despite the pressure from the student body, responsibility for any untoward incident will be borne by the government as well as the authority of the university.
