Manipur soccer tourney gets under way

IMPHAL, Dec 2 - The 59th edition of the Churachand Singh KCSI, CBE Memorial All Indian Invitation Football Tournament, one of the biggest and oldest football tourney popularly known as CC meet got off at the Mapal Kangjeibung ground in the heart of Imphal town on Wednesday.

Irrigation and Flood Control department Minister Ngamthang Haokip opened the month long football tournament in presence of president of All Manipur Football Association (AMFA) P Raghumani Singh.

The opening match of the tourney Kakching Popular Sporting Club (KPSC) defeated Kakching and Sirti (Monsang) Football Club Chandel 6-5 via tie breaker after playing 2-2 draw in regulation time. It was an interesting match. The first half was a keenly contested with both teams playing an aggressive brand of football.

USA Khurai will take on NACO Nambul Mapal in Imphal tomorrow at 1.30 pm. This time a total of 21 football teams including Assam Regimental Centre Shillong, Assam State Electricity Board are participating in the tournament which is held under the aegis of AMFA. The winning team will become richer by Rs 5 lakh while the runners-up team will pocket Rs 2 lakh as prize money.
