Manipur scribes demand colleague�s release

IMPHAL, Aug 12 - Journalists here marched late last night from Manipur Press Club to the Chief Minister�s official bungalow demanding the release of a colleague who was arrested by Manipur police for uploading a post on social media which allegedly contained defamatory remarks.

Kishorchandra Wangkhemcha, who is working with IS TV, a local cable television news network, is still in the custody of the police till the filing of this report. The journalist was arrested on August 9.

According to reports, representatives of All Manipur Working Journalists (AMWJU) met Chief Minister N Biren Singh late last night to demand the release of the journalist.

Kishorchandra Wangkhemcha had allegedly posted something on Facebook which was �defamatory� in nature. Sources said that the post was sensitive which could create troubles. The journalist had posted the �defamatory remarks� on Thursday, according to the reports.

The reports said that a case has been registered under FIR no 173(8)2018 IPS, under section 505(2)/500 IPC against the journalist.

According to sources, the journalist is likely to be released anytime soon as the Chief Minister had reportedly assured the representatives of All Manipur Working Journalists to meet their demand.
