Manipur Riflesman among 3 nabbed with drugs in Guwahati

IMPHAL, Aug 5 - Manipur police on Friday confirmed that one personnel of Manipur Rifles was among the three persons arrested with a consignment of narcotics drugs in Guwahati.

Media reports on Thursday claimed three Manipuris including two Police constables were arrested by Assam Police in Guwahati along with 15 grams of brown sugar during an operation in Beltola area.

�I have checked the matter with my Assam counterpart and we came to know that one of the arrested persons belong to Manipur Rifles battalion,� DGP Manipur LM Khaute said while speaking to media here on Friday. �We will take necessary disciplinary action once the detailed report from Guwahati is received.�

Police sources identified the culprits as Soibam Romel (45) of Ngaikhong Khullen and Ingo Singh (40) and W Manglemjao Singh, both from Thoubal district. They were arrested during an operation by Crime Branch of Basistha Police station in Guwahati based on an intelligence tip off on August 3.

The police are reportedly interrogating the trio to gain leads of the drug trafficking nexus. The seized drug is valued at more than Rs 5 lakh, sources here said.

Meanwhile, stating that the State police have been making all out efforts to prevent the abuse and illict trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, DGP Manipur Khaute also informed that Manipur police seized 1.63 kilogram of heroin, 118.5 kilogram of ganja, 29 kilograms of opium, 20,000 ephedrine tablets,1510 methamphetamine tablets from January to July this year.

Besides, an area measuring around 455 acres of poppy/ganja cultivation in the State were destroyed from January-July this year, he added. A total of 63 cases were also registered in this regard.

The police chief further claimed that there has been an improvement in finalisation of investigation of criminal cases in the recent past as the department has disposed 1,485 cases out of 1,990 registered cases from January to June this year.
