Manipur reports two more COVID-19 deaths

IMPHAL, Aug 22 - Two more deaths and 83 new COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in the past 24 hours in Manipur, State Health Department sources said today.

The total death toll in the State due to COVID-19 is currently 22. The COVID-19 tally in the State has risen to 5,132.

�In the past 24 hours, 61 persons from the general population and 22 from the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) were confirmed positive,� said D Kh Sasheekumar Mangang, Additional Director and spokesperson of the Manipur Health Department here in a press release today.

�Only one person from Chandel out of the general population is a returnee from other States, whereas the rest 60 are locals without any significant travel history. They are being shifted to COVID care facilities,� the release added.

�Yesterday, one male aged 34 years from Churachandpur expired at the UNACCO (a COVID care centre) due to COVID-19,� the release said. �Today, a female aged 70 years from Thoubal expired due to COVID-19 and other comorbid health conditions.�

It may be mentioned that the State reported its first death due to COVID-19 on July 29.

In the past 24 hours, 194 persons were also discharged after recovery. The cumulative number of discharged cases now stands at 3,455. The number of active cases is 1, 655. The recovery rate is 67.32 per cent, the release added.

As of Saturday, a total of 3,36,047 persons were screened at various entry points of the State, while 1,28,468 individuals were tested for COVID-19 at various testing centres in the State, official sources said.

Meanwhile, sample collection teams have been expanded with the deployment of 25 doctors and the district surveillance team for Imphal West district where the State capital is located. Arrangements for testing of tanker drivers are also being made.
