Manipur remembers freedom fighters on Patriots� Day

IMPHAL, Aug 13 - Manipur today observed the 129th Patriots� Day to pay tribute to the freedom fighters from the State.

The day is observed on August 13 to commemorate the 1891 Anglo-Manipur war in which scores of people sacrificed their lives to safeguard the independence of the land.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh led ministers and officials in paying floral tribute at several sites including Hicham Yaichampat, Moirangkhom, Thangal General Temple Complex, Palace Compound, Kangla Uttra, Kangla Fort, Saheed Minar, Bir Tikendrajit Park, in and around Imphal.

A contingent of Manipur Rifles sounded the last post and offered gun salute to the martyrs, on the occasion.

Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar Singh, other Cabinet ministers, MLAs, Chief Secretary, DGP, top civil and police officers and other dignitaries attended the function.

Speaking to reporters, Chief Minister Biren Singh said that the day �reminds us of the supreme sacrifice made by our forefathers for freedom and sovereignty of our motherland and this sense of patriotism should not be forgotten by the present generation for strength and unity�.

Responding to a question on the peace talks between the Centre and the NSCN (I-M) , Biren Singh said that an assurance had been received that the opinion of the people of the State would before concluding any peace accord.

Meanwhile, the Manipur Government announced a list of police personnel and officers who will receive medals for gallantry and outstanding devotion to duty. The Chief Minister�s Police Medal for Gallantry will be awarded to 13 police personnel, while the Chief Minister�s Police Medal for Outstanding Devotion to Duty will be awarded to seven others.

There are also reports of observance of the Patriots� Day by Thangal communities, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee, National People�s Party, district administrations, civil society organisations and others.
