Manipur Press Club foundation day celebrated

IMPHAL, Jan 6 � The 39th foundation day of the Manipur Press Club was celebrated today under the auspices of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU), the apex body of journalists in Manipur.

With the release of a souvenir, a formal foundation day function was held at the Club premises here with State Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh as the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, he lauded the role of the press in a democratic country.

Indian Journalists Union president SN Sinha urged the State Government to implement welfare schemes for the journalists. �Let the journalists work in a better atmoshphere�, he added.

Journalists� Union of Assam president Geetartha Pathak informed that the State Governments of Tripura and Assam have announced pension of Rs 6,000 and Rs 5,000 to the working journalists. He urged the Manipur Government to follow suit in the interest of the journalist community in the State.

AMWJU president Wangkhemcha Shamjai also spoke on the occasion where a souvenir was also released.

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar, Social Welfare Minister Mirabai, Parliamentary Secretary K Meghachandra and others also attended the function.
