Manipur observes June 2001 incident

IMPHAL, June 18 � Manipur today paid floral tributes to the departed souls who laid down their lives during the agitation in June 2001 in protest against the extension of the ceasefire between the Government of India and the NSCN (IM) without territorial limit.

The June 18 incident was observed by holding public meetings.

The All Manipur United Clubs� Organisation (AMUCO) observed the day as 11th Unity Day at Thangmeiband Athletics Union ground here by holding a public meeting after paying floral tributes to the departed souls.

United Committee Manipur (UCM) also observed the day as 11th Great June Uprising Day at Kekrupat Memorial complex here. It was on this day in 2001 that the people of Manipur came out on the streets to oppose the extension of the ceasefire �without territorial limit�.

The agitators went on the rampage burning down a number of Government buildings including the old State Assembly building and official residences of the MLAs including the Chief Minister�s Secretariat.
