IMPHAL, Nov 18 - Manipur newspapers particularly the Imphal-based ones failed to hit the stands on Friday after newspaper publishers and distributors here decided to cease publication in view of the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

Members of All Manipur Newspaper Publishers Association (AMNPA), All Manipur Newspaper Sale and Distributors Association (AMNSDA) and newspersons also staged a sit-in demonstration at Keishampat here, demanding inclusion of newspaper houses in the exemption list of institutions for accepting the demonetised notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 like hospitals, etc.

Later, a delegation apprised their grievances to Chief Secretary O Nabakishore. They also sent a memorandum to Chief General Manager P Vijaya Kumar of Reserve Bank of India, Mumbai demanding the exemption.

We, the publishers and on behalf of the hawkers union implore you to consider for inclusion of newspaper houses in the exempt list, allowing us to accept the demonetised notes till November 24 like public hospitals, milk booths, air and railway ticketing, etc, said AMNPA president S Niladhaja Singh in the memorandum.
