IMPHAL, March 11 Lok Sabha MP from Manipur Dr Thokchom Meinya has reiterated his demand for repeal of the infamous Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act, 1958, while participating in the zero hour discussion in the parliament on Tuesday, a release here said.
Highlighted that four Commissions/Committees have recommended for repeal of AFSPA, he regretted that recently the Union Home Ministry has recommended rejection of the recommendation of the Report of the Justice Jeevan Reddy Committee.
The MP said the effect of the Act is so huge that many people have been killed in fake encounters and many people have disappeared. If this Committees Report is rejected by the Home Ministry, I am afraid things shall turn from bad to worse, he said and suggested to the Government to re-consider this.
Urging the Union Government to immediately intervene and direct the Ministry of Home Affairs to re-consider its decision to reject the Report of the Jeevan Reddy Committee, the MP further urged for immediate repeal of the AFSPA.
Major rights groups and other social organisations in Manipur and others have expressed dismay over the rejection of the Jeevan Reddy Committee report by the Union Home Ministry. The report had asked for repealing the controversial AFSPA.
