Manipur MP appeals to end blockade

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Nov 24 - Manipur Lok Sabha MP Dr Thokchom Meinya has urged the Union Government to immediately intervene in the ongoing situation in the State in view of the economic blockade and demonetisation of Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes.

Demanding a dedicated 24x7 National Highways (NHs) Protection Force in the Parliament on Wednesday, Dr Meinya, said, people of the State are facing insurmountable hardships in the wake of the blockade and demonetisation. The prices of essential commodities have sky-rocketed. Petrol per litre costs more than Rs 300 and there was no stock of petrol and diesel in the State. Schools were closed for want of fuel for the school vans, he said.

Manipur has been witnessing indefinite economic blockade on the NHs by United Naga Council (UNC) since November 1 in protest against the State Governments plan to upgrade Sadar Hills and Jiribam into full-fledged districts.

The demonetisation has further worsened the situation. I urge upon UNC to immediately call off the economic blockade, he added.
