By CORRESPONDENT

IMPHAL, Aug 24 - A Congress MLA in Manipur was produced before the court of the Special Judge, National Investigation Agency (NIA), here today in connection with the probe into the case of missing arms and ammunition from the armoury of the Director General of Police (DGP), sources said.

Later, the court remanded MLA Yamthong Haokip in judicial custody for 15 days, the sources added. However, Haokip is likely to stay at the security ward of the JNIMS Hospital at Porompat in Imphal East district in view of his health condition.

The MLA, who represents the Saikul Assembly constituency in Kangpokpi district, was flown to a Delhi hospital for treatment recently.

The NIA has been probing the case relating to disappearance of 56 pistols and 58 magazines from the armoury of the DGP pool located within the premises of the second battalion of the Manipur Rifles here. The weapons went missing between 2016 and early 2017.

On July 30, the NIA raided the residence of MLA Haokip at Mantripukhuri in Imphal East district and recovered one of the missing pistols.

In March this year, the BJP-led coalition Government in Manipur decided to hand over the case to the NIA. The missing weapons were said to be part of a consignment of 570 9mm pistols purchased by the Manipur Government on September 11, 2014, for the States security forces.
