Manipur media bodies protest bomb threat

IMPHAL, Dec 16 - The journalists� community under the aegis of All Manipur Working Journalists� Union (AMWJU) and Editor�s Guild Manipur (EGM) today staged a sit-in demonstration to protest against the threat to media-persons at Keishampat junction here.

The demonstration was staged as per joint emergency meeting decisions of AMWJU and EGM on Tuesday to launch protests in the wake of recovery of a hand grenade at the residence of an editor-in-chief of a local cable channel Yumnam Rupachandra on Monday night.

Police said that a Chinese-made hand grenade wrapped in a polythene bag was found at the entry gate of the residence of Yumnam Rupachandra, at Singjamei area in the district on December 14 that was subsequently defused by bomb disposal squad personnel.

All Imphal-based daily newspapers on Wednesday blanked their editorials while popular local cable channels-ISTV, Impact TV and Image TV stoped airing daily news bulletins to protest against the threats to media.

Meanwhile, an eight-member joint team led by AMWJU president W Shamjai and EGM president A Mobi called on Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and submitted a memorandum.
