Manipur lead medal tally

IMPHAL, March 5 - With 44 medals including 22 gold, host Manipur still occupies the first position in the medal tally of the ongoing 2nd edition of the North East Games at the Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal on Saturday.

However, Tripura dominates athletics event by securing 6 gold medals. In Discus (women) Purabi Debnath bagged gold (36.00m) while Mizoram�s Rameng Mawi Sailo secured silver (31.22m). Similarly Habibi Mia got gold in men�s 400m race while Manipur�s N Konungjao bagged silver. In women�s 400m, Madhulima Deb of Tripura won gold (01:00:31) while her compatriot Fatema Begum clinched silver medal (01:03:30). Tripura team also bagged gold in both men and women categories of 4X100 relay while Manipur team secured second position. In men�s high jump too, Litam Debbarman (1.86m) of Tripura bagged first position while Rajkumar Wareppa (1.83m) of Manipur won second position.

Unfortunately Assam�s women hockey team lost to host Manipur team by a margin of 0-16 goals in their last league match played at the Khuman Lampak Hockey Stadium here on Saturday. As a result the final match of women�s hockey will be played between Manipur and Mizoram tomorrow while the final football matches both men�s (Mizoram vs Nagaland) and women�s (Manipur vs Nagaland) will be played on Monday.

Meanwhile, though Mizoram dominates in the men�s judo by securing three gold medals, Arunachal Pradesh lifter won another gold in 77 kg (men) in the day�s weightlifting competition by defeating his nearest rival A Arjun Singh of Manipur while his team mate Langpu Romen bagged silver in 69kg (men) weightlifting event. The gold goes to Manipur�s L Sunderjit Singh.

Mizoram gold medallists in men�s judo are-R Vanrammawii (57kg), HC Lalchung Nunga (73kg) and Jonathan Lalrinsanga (90kg).

In women�s Judo, players from Manipur�L Sandhya (48kg), Gangarani (70kg), L Rishini (70 plus kg) and Mizoram player Lalhumahimi (52kg) bagged gold medals while Mizoram players Lalnilawmaamii (48kg), Lallawmzuala (70kg), Lalthozuali (70 plus kg) and Silom Jesla of Arunachal Pradesh were silver medal winners.

It may mentioned that around 1020 players (including 100 officials) from the eight NE States are competing in eight disciplines-athletic, badminton, boxing, football, judo, table tennis and weight Lifting.
