Manipur lawyers protest shooting of Advocate General

IMPHAL, March 10 � Lawyers community in the state continues to protest against the shooting and injuring of Manipur�s Advocate General (AG) Nongmeikapam Kotiswar in an �accidental firing� by a cabinet minister. Today being the third day of the protest, lawyers of High Court Bar Association, Manipur and All Manipur Bar Association staged a protest rally in Imphal.

The rally which started from the Gauhati High Court Imphal Bench premises passed through Khoyathong, Nagamapal and converged at a subordinate court complex at Uripok for a meeting wherein they resolved to monitor the case of shooting of the AG based on police FIR 36 (3) under section 326-27 of the Arms Act and to make the developments public.

Meanwhile, State Governor Gurbachan Jagat visited the injured AG Kotiswar at Shija hospital today morning. High Court Bar Association, Manipur had sought State Governor Gurbachan Jagat�s intervention into the March 6 incident.

�We�ve submitted a resolution copy of our special emergency meeting in this regard�, N Jotendro Singh, Secretary of the Bar Association said, adding �we�re also urging for immediate registration of an FIR and for the case to be handed over to CBI for proper investigation�.

The lawyers are also abstaining from courts since March 8 affecting the judicial services in the State.

A day after the incident, Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh while officially confirming that the firing was accidental, ruled out an inquiry into the incident.

The ongoing budget session of the Manipur assembly too, remained silent on the issue on it�s the third day in session.

PTI adds: Police have registered a case in the shooting and injuring of Manipur Advocate General N Koteshwar.

The case was registered at the Lamlai police station in Imphal East district of Manipur, police said.

It was filed under IPC section 307, while Tribal Development Minister D D Thaisi�s revolver which went off accidentally when the AG, Thasi and Works Minister K Ranjit were returning from a function in Ukhrul district on Saturday, was seized.

Several organisations including the All Manipur Bar Association have demanded a judicial or CBI inquiry into the shooting.

Meanwhile, Koteshwar, who was recovering after a bullet from his chest was removed, might be released from the hospital soon, hospital sources said.
