Manipur Governor casts vote in all-women polling station

By CORRESPONDENT

IMPHAL, April 19 - Manipur Governor Dr Najma Heptulla on Thursday cast her vote at 11/34 Old Lambulane (B) polling station manned by all women. The polling station located in the heart of Imphal town has 436 voters, including 205 women.

Speaking to reporters after casting her vote, Dr Heptulla, who was earlier enrolled as a voter in New Delhi, said that one should transfer the vote to the location where he or she stays without wasting it. I feel very happy as I have participated in nation building by casting my vote, she said.

I made a statement in Parliament that at least 33 per cent representation should be there for women, the Governor said in response to a question on less participation of women in electoral politics. I am sorry that there is only 8 per cent representation of women in all political parties. The parties should create an atmosphere in which more women can come to take part in the decision-making process.
