By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, Aug 26 Manipur Assembly today resolved to urge the State Government to constitute a District Re-organisation Commission of Manipur in order to bring about effective and efficient administration of the State.

Senior opposition leader O Joy of Manipur Peoples Party moved the resolution in the House.

Nine legislators both from ruling and opposition including the Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh participated in the discussion wherein most of them supported the demand to create a separate district for administrative convenience.

Informing that the State chief secretary led committee has been constituted to look into the district boundaries of the State and submit the report to the government within three months, Ibobi said the government will act after the committee submits the report.

Opposition leaders Radhabinod Koijam and O Joy urged to shorten the report submission period to two months. Two MLAs from the Sadar Hills area Kangpokpi and Saitu, said people of the area had waited 40 years and could not wait any longer. Both MLA Thangminlien Kipgen and Haokholet Kipgen insisted on immediate creation of the district.

The Chief Minister also appealed to both the agitating groups to call off the blockades saying the government will take a decision on the district issue soon. He said he does not want to create another problem while solving a problem.

Sadar Hills District Demand Committee (SHDDC) had been imposing economic blockade on the two National Highways 39 and 53, demanding a separate Sadar Hills district while United Naga Council imposed indefnite bandh on these highways and NH 150 to protest the alleged move to bifurcate Naga areas in creating the district.
