Manipur flood situation still alarming

By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, Oct 10 The flood situation in Manipur continues to be alarming though the water level in almost all the rivers flowing through the four valley districts has been receding today.

Many low-lying areas in the valley areas continue to be submerged. The flash flood had hit heart the Imphal town including the main business centre Thangal Bazar and Paona Bazar and even the VIP quarters on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Manipur has been cut-off with the rest of the country again owing to the massive landslides on the National Highway 30 triggered by incessant rainfall.

Reports here said the massive landslide had washed away substantial portion of the highway at Tobio village, about 90 kms north of the State capital Imphal.

Vehicular movement on the Manipur-Nagaland section of the NH has come to a grinding halt following the landslide, sources here said. Though there are reports about clearance of the debris and repairing of the road link since last afternoon, no heavy vehicle is plying on the route for the second day.

A landslide has also been reported at a spot near Khongnem village while there are at least three other landslides at Karong area. As these landslides were not yet cleared, normal movement of goods and passenger carriers along with CRPF escorts has been cancelled for the time being.

Mao police station sources said more than 31 heavy vehicles including 20 oil tankers, 10 bullet tankers carrying LPG and one loaded truck of the Food Corporation of India have been escorted by the CRPF up to Mao Gate from Dimapur side. These vehicles are awaiting arrival of security escorts from Imphal.

The traffic along the 220 km Imphal-Jiribam section of the National Highway 53 has also been disturbed due to landslide at Nungba in Tamenglong district. Owing to the landslide, over 200 loaded trucks heading towards Imphal from Jiribam was stranded, police said.

Even as the water level of the major rivers have started receding in Imphal area, the situation in the downstream of the Thoubal rivers in Manipurs Thoubal district is alarming.

Hundreds of homesteads across the Imphal and Thoubal districts have been under water rendering thousands of people homeless . People in the low-lying areas are shifting to safer areas as more places are getting submerged.
