Manipur ex-minister passes away

IMPHAL, Nov 20 - Former Manipur minister and senior BJP leader Salam Ibohal Singh passed away here on Monday. He was 73.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has condoled the sudden demise of the former minister, who represented the Thanga Assembly Constituency in Bishnupur district.

�On his demise, Manipur has lost a great leader and a sincere politician,� the Chief Minister said in his condolence message.

Salam Ibohal was elected to the Manipur Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1980 from the Thanga constituency. He was re-elected in 1990 and became the Minister of Power, Rural Development, and Panchayati Raj. He was last elected to the Assembly in 2002.

Manipur BJP organised a condolence meeting at its State office at Canchipur near here on Tuesday to mourn his demise. A two-minute silence was observed as a mark of respect to the departed soul. Former Union minister Th Chaoba, ex-MLA M Bhorot, and ex-MLA Kikonbou Newmai attended the meeting.

Salam Ibohal had joined the BJP in 2009 and served as a spokesperson of the party�s State unit till 2016.
