Manipur COVID-19 cases surge to 552

IMPHAL, June 17 - With the detection of 52 new positive cases, the COVID-19 tally of Manipur has jumped to 552, Health Department officials said today.

�In the last 24 hours, 52 persons (32 males and 20 females) were confirmed positive at the VRDLs (Virus Research and Diagnosis Laboratories) of the RIMS (Regional Institute of Medical Sciences) and the JNIMS (Jawaharlal Institute of Medical Sciences),� said Dr Kh Sasheekumar Mangang, Additional Director of the Manipur Health Department today. They are being shifted to the COVID care facilities, he added.

All necessary precautions like containment and contact tracing are being taken, the Additional Director said.

�The total numbers of positive and active cases are 552 and 360 respectively. As many as 33 persons were discharged from the RIMS today after they were found COVID-19 free on conducting RT-PCR tests. The total number of recovered cases is 192. The recovery rate is 34.78,� Dr Mangang added.

Under the initiative of the Central and State governments, five RT-PCR machines are functioning at the VRDLs of the RIMS and the JNIMS. �In addition, three TrueNat machines are also being used for COVID testing. The testing average is about 1,200 per day. At this rate, the backlogs in the two VRDLs are likely to be cleared soon.

Till Wednesday, 29,865 samples have been tested for COVID-19, while 2,72,295 persons were screened at various entry points to the State, according to the latest status report issued by the State Surveillance Officer of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme. Around 21,225 people are currently at quarantine centres, while 22,083 others have already completed their quarantine period.
