Manipur civic polls conclude peacefully

IMPHAL, Jan 3 � The polling for eight municipal council and 18 nagar panchayat seats in Manipur have passed off peacefully today across the four valley districts.

More than 300 candidates are in the fray for the 26 seats municipal council and nagar panchayat in the four valley districts of the State.

Sporadic incidents of ballot box grabbing and destruction of ballot papers have necessitated re-polling in certain polling stations. Re-polling will be conducted for Lilong Chajing polling station in Imphal West district. Ballot papers for the polling station were destroyed following a scuffle between agents of competing parties.

A re-poll has been announced at Lilong Chajing polling station following the destruction of ballot boxes by some troublemakers.

At polling station in Lilong Arapat in Thoubal district, a re-poll has been announced as two ballot boxes were snatched and later dumped in a river.

Till the filing of this report, the percentage of voters turnout could not be ascertained.
