Manipur Anganwadis threaten to go on strike

IMPHAL, Oct 31 � Anganwadi workers and helpers in Manipur have threatened to stop their routine activities at all the Anganwadi centres in the State if the government failed to clear their 10 months� pending salaries.

�We would even take steps to close down functioning of the anganwadi centres in the State if the government fail to fulfill our demands�, said President L Nolini of All Manipur Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Union (AMAWU).

�Our demands include payment of 10 months� pending salaries before November 5, pension scheme and review of government�s move to float Anganwadi monitoring committee�.

There are about 8,000 Anganwadi workers and helpers serving in 4,000 Anganwadi Centres under Integrated Child Development Services scheme in the State, according to Anganwadi workers. They are supposed to get salary of Rs 3,000 per month while helpers used to get Rs 1,500 a month.

Nearly a thousand Anganwadi workers and helpers today took to the streets here to press the government to fulfil their deamnds.

They also staged an hour long sit in demonstration in front of the Social Welfare department here. Later the Anganwadi workers and helpers marched towards the Secretariat block in Imphal to submit the memorandum to the Social Welfare minister Ak Mirabai Devi. They also submitted a memorandum to the Social Welfare Minister.
