Manikoot griha of Tangara Sattra

GUWAHATI, March 15 - Eminent Sattriya exponent and Burha Sattriya of Barpeta Sattra Basistha Dev Sarma inaugurated the manikoot griha, the sanctum sanctorum of Tangara Sattra, Guwahati on Wednesday.

Tangara Sattra, located in the Beltola-Rukminigaon area of the city, is an ancient seat of Vaishnavite tradition having the legacy of Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradeva.

The decaying kirtan ghar of the sattra is being reconstructed by the Tangara Sattra Management Committee. As part of the restoration drive, the sanctum sanctorum has been renovated.

While shifting the Guru asan from old kirtan griha to the new manikoot griha, Basistha Dev Sarma said that Sankaradeva has given a precious gift to the people of the State in the form of the kirtan ghar.

Sarma, who had recently been selected for the prestigious Srimanta Sankardev Award by the Government of Assam, dwelt at length on the legacy of Barpeta, Patbausi, Ganakkuchi, Sundaridiya, Bardowa, Madhupur and other sattras of upper and lower Assam. He also threw light on the lives and works of Srimanta Sankaradeva, Madhabdev, Narayan Das Thakur, Mathura Das and other Vaishnavite gurus.

Earlier, on behalf of the sattra�s management committee, Dipanka Hazarika conducted the meeting and spoke on the life and achievements of Basistha Dev Sarma.
