Manhandling of doctor at Chabua condemned

By Our Bureau

DIBRUGARH, June 16 - The Medical College Teachers Association of Assam (MCTAA) has condoled the death of a patient at the Tata Referral Hospital, Chabua, after an operation. MCTAA president Dr Sajeed Ahmed and its secretary, Dr AJ Patowary, expressed sympathies to the bereaved family.

However, the manhandling of Dr Hussain, a gynaecologist who treated the deceased, was strongly condemned by the association. The association stated that without proper investigation and establishment of facts pertaining to the untimely death of the patient, it is an unjust and criminal act to assault and humiliate a dedicated gynaecologist of Chabua.

The MCTAA sought early identification of the assailants and prompt action by the district administration to restore the respectful bondage between doctors and patients.

Tinsukia Correspondent adds: Tinsukia doctors under the banner of the Tinsukia branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) have condemned the assault on the senior gynaecologist of Chabua by an irate mob on June 12.

An emergency general body meeting of the branch was held under the presidentship of Dr MS Konwar on June 13 at the IMA House, Tinsukia. The meeting conveyed its strong objection to and resentment over the physical assault and mental torture of a medical practitioner and the vandalism of hospital property.

The meeting unanimously agreed on three resolutions and decided to present a memorandum to the district administration.

In the first resolution, the members condoled the sudden and unexpected death of the patient and expressed their sympathies to the bereaved family. They also observed a minutes silence for the eternal peace of the departed soul.

In its second resolution, the members expressed solidarity with Dr Aizaz Hussain and pledged to stand by him in this hour of crisis and mental agony. Thirdly, the members condemned the violent attack on Dr Hussain while on duty and the destruction of hospital property by the mob suspected to have been led and incited by a few miscreants and demanded strong action against them.

Meanwhile, the memorandum was submitted to the Deputy Commissioner by a delegation of the IMA, Tinsukia, led by its president Dr MS Konwar and secretary Dr Prashant Agarwal.
