Mangaldai Town Club centenary bash under way

MANGALDAI, Dec 1 - Mangaldai Town Club, which is a pioneer organisation of Darrang district in the field of sports and culture, and founded in 1918, started its centenary celebration on Friday with a year-long programme.

Befitting the occasion, a community run in the morning spread the message of �Save Nature� and �Communal Harmony�. The run was organised from Block Chowka here up to the Club premises and flagged off by Pratap Bordoloi, Chairman of Mangaldai Municipal Board.

The above was followed by several other programmes, including smriti tarpan initiated by Nagendra Nath Choudhury, former president of the Club, hoisting of the Club�s flag by its president Anil Chandra Sharma, hoisting of the flag of the centenary celebration by Mangaldai legislator Gurujyoti Das.

The highlight of the centenary flag hoisting ceremony was the rendition of a chorus specially composed by prominent singer and music composer Jibendra Mohan Deba Sharma.

A programme on plantation and free distribution of saplings was also carried out on the occasion where Darrang Deputy Commissioner Ashok Kumar Barman was present as the chief guest.

The inaugural day celebration also featured ceremonial lighting of lamps in several prominent locations of Mangaldai town, including the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Park, Jayanta Hazarika Memorial Park and the Club premises by Bipul Ranjan Dey, former president of the Club.

The 14th edition of Anosha Hazarika Memorial three-day district-level prize money chess competition also marked the celebration.

Meanwhile, talking to this Correspondent, Hiren Deka, secretary of Mangaldai Town Club Centenary Celebration Committee mentioned about preparations under way for the proposed series of other programmes as a part of the year-long celebration which included Sonajuddin Ahmed Memorial district-level prize money carrom competition, a mega health mela, a national-level drama festival etc., in a phasewise manner since December 6 next.
