Mangaldai relief camps facing shortage of baby food

MANGALDAI, July 17 - The relief camps, which have been set up in various parts of Mangaldai in the wake of flood, are now facing shortage of baby food that has become a matter of concern for the camp inmates. According to information, around 100 infants have been staying in relief camps, scattered around Mangaldai. It is learnt that the Commerce College camp has accommodated 45 infants so far, followed by 25 in Mangaldai Govt HS School, while the figure in the Mangaldai Law College camp stood at 10 and the rest are taking shelter in various other camps.

On the other hand, around 25 pregnant women are staying in three relief camps, including Govt HS School, ITI and Law College. Meanwhile, a joint team of District Child Welfare Committee and District Child Protection Unit, Darrang comprising DCPO Kobendra Warisha, in-charge Legal cum Probation Officer Dulal Ch Deka and members of CWC Purnima Goswami and Rashmi Rekha Devi on Tuesday afternoon took stock of the situation of the children, lactating and pregnant women of the camps.

Talking to this correspondent, the CWC members said that they are concerned about the health and hygiene, safety and security of the children and pregnant mothers. On being asked about the alleged shortage of baby food, they said, �We have seen supply of rice, dal, salt etc. Some inmates have complained about the shortage of baby food during our visit, but we have asked the mothers to rely more on breast-feeding and have patience for supply of baby food.� They also appealed to the non-governmental agencies to help the inmates in this hour of crisis.

The flood situation in Darrang district has remained grim on Wednesday as 214 villages of the district have been affected so far with a population of 2.15 lakh.
