By Zodin Sanga

AIZAWL, May 14 - Tough times bring out good people who rise to the occasion to lend a helping hand to others. Heart-touching stories of extraordinary kindness have poured in during these challenging times, and one such instance came to light here where a mysterious man has helped four persons repay their loans. Thanks to this man, whose identity is known to bank clerks alone, the four petty traders have been able to repay their loans in full.

Assistant manager of SBIs Aizawl main branch, Sheryl L Vanchhawng, said a man phoned the bank a few days ago and asked if there were borrowers who were unable to repay their loans due to the coronavirus-triggered lockdown and expressed his willingness to help them.

We selected four borrowers, who had otherwise regularly paid their monthly instalments but struggled to repay their loans due to the lockdown. This person then paid a total of Rs 9,96,365 to clear their loans through online transaction, she said. With their debts now cleared, the bank on Wednesday returned the loanees their land settlement certificates, which they had mortgaged.

Following this development, the four loanees, including three women, wanted to thank the generous man in person, but they could not do so as he chose to remain anonymous.

One of them, Muana L Fanai, took to the social media to thank the man whom he called a guardian angel. Fanai had started poultry farming with the loan amount. But a series of misfortunes struck him and his situation worsened after the coronavirus outbreak. He owed an outstanding amount of Rs 2,46,631 to the bank, which has now been cleared by the mysterious man. Bank sources said even before the current crisis, the man in question had helped a few others in repaying their loans.
