By Correspondent

AGARTALA, July 20 Witchcraft has once again claimed a life in a remote village of Amarpur subdivision in South Tripura district as an elderly person Surendra Kishore Jamatiya (64) was beaten to death on suspicion of practising occult art.

Sources said that Surendra Kishore Jamatiya of Gamakobari locality under Birganj Police Station was beaten to death by tribal villagers after resentment brew up in the area following the death of a lady, wife of one Akraisha Jamatiya, a local big shot on Monday evening.

A local body meeting to discuss the death of the lady was convened on June 14 which flopped due to lack of consensus. Finally, the responsibility of conducting justice was entrusted upon Tuicha Alak Moyal, a resident of the locality. A Mayal durbaar or justice meeting was accordingly convened in the household of Deb Kishore Jamatiya, Chowdhury or justice of the clan on July 18. Surendra was admitted at Natunbazaar Hospital at that time in critical condition.

His younger brother Samasta Jamatiya stayed present at the meeting in absence of his brother. A mob started to thrash him asking the whereabouts of the occult suspect. After a brief thrashing, Samasta finally spurted out the location of his ailing brother and two vehicles filled with agitated lawbreaking people started off for the hospital. Surendra was pulled down from the hospital bed and packed up in the vehicle, thrashing him all the while.
