JORHAT, Oct 3 - Police on Wednesday arrested an uncle of a nine-year old girl on the outskirts of Jorhat town, on charges of sexually abusing her several times.
The accused has been booked under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
The incident came to light after a woman advocate came to know about the incident when the girl had to be hospitalised as she was suffering from trauma. The woman advocate took the initiative to lodge an FIR at the Jorhat Police Station against the uncle.
However, there were allegations of police not taking the matter seriously, following which the advocate approached a senior Guwahati-based journalist who then took up the case with two senior bureaucrats of Dispur.
After the intervention of the bureaucrats, police took action by arresting the accused, the journalist stated in Jorhat on Wednesday.
