JORHAT, April 4 -�The Jorhat District�and Sessions Judge VK Chandak�today sentenced Bijit Saikia, a resident of Lahing village under Mariani Police Station in the district, to rigorous imprisonment for life after convicting him of murdering his wife (Dipali Saikia) and then cremating�her body within the compound of his house. The judge convicted Saikia under Sections 302 and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence) of the IPC. Saikia committed the crime after a quarrel with his wife on July 1, 2014. He has also�been imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 by the court.
The court acquitted two other villagers of Lahing� - Gunaram Barua and Golap Gogoi - who were charged with assisting Saikia in cremating the victim�s body for lack of evidence.During the trial the court examined 15 witnesses.
