AIZAWL, Nov 3 - A 42-year-old man was convicted here today for murdering five members of a family in 2015.
Aizawl district Additional District and Sessions Judge Dr HTC Lalrinchhana convicted the man, Laltlanchhuaha, in five murder cases as well as trespassing into a house, under Section 449 of the IPC and attempt to murder under Section 307 of the IPC.
On the night of January 9, 2015, Laltlanchhuaha, then aged 37, who is a resident of Republic locality here, broke into the house of one Sangliansiama in the same neighbourhood and hacked the 57-year-old man to death. He also killed Sangliansiamas 57-year-old wife, Khualthangi, their adopted son, Isaac Lalrinnunga (6), Sangliansiamas sister, Vanlalchhungi (54), and his nephew, Samuel Lalrinchhana (14).
Sangliansiamas nephew (Vanlalchhungis son), Lalhriatpuia (28), who also lived along with the family, was not at home at the time of the incident. Though Laltlanchhuaha also tried to kill the housemaid, Lalzepuii, she hid herself inside a toilet before she was rescued by local residents later.
The key witness said Laltlanchhuaha walked into the house with a knife and demanded money from Sangliansiama. After Sangliansiama gave him Rs 1,000, he asked for more. When Sangliansiama said he did not have any more money, Laltlanchhuaha attacked him with the knife.
The incident has been believed to be the rarest of rare case in Mizorams criminal history. In the courts order pronounced through video conferencing, the Additional District and Sessions Judge said that he would announce the sentence on Thursday.
