KALAIGAON, July 13 - The mysterious murder case of teacher Nayantara Saharia (53) of Kalaigaon took a surprising turn with husband Upen Barua, also a science teacher, confessing to killing his wife on July 6.
Nayantara Saharia went missing from her home on the morning of July 6. Her body was found inside a classroom of UN Academy, Kalaigaon close to her house.
Upen Barua also confessed that their eldest son Hirakjyoti Barua, their domestic maid Yashoda Rabha (a widow) and another person Md Newaji Hussain were also involved in the planning and killing of Nayantara. This was officially stated by Violet Baruah, DIG, BTAD at a press meet held at Kalaigaon PS on Monday.
DIG Baruah said a case had been registered at Kalaigaon Police Station immediately after the incident was reported. According to the DIG, the case was one of the most critical domestic violence cases in Assam.
She said that the husband had confessed to have taken his wife to the isolated UN Academy classroom along with their eldest son on the morning of July 6 where an unsuspecting Nayantara was first strangulated with a gamosa followed by pouring of acid on her face.
The police also said that the husband and the eldest son were helped by their domestic maid and another man Newaji Hussain. The culprits tried to mislead the police from the beginning.
DIG Baruah said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by Ripul Das, SP Udalguri was formed to nab the culprits. A forensic team, dog squad was also involved along with the support of a CID team. DIG Baruah also said that all possible scientific and human intelligence support was taken to solve the most inhuman and cruel murder case.
�The mere arrest of culprits is not important. Most important is to prosecute them successfully in court. Further investigation is on and all the four accused were produced before the court and have been remanded for seven more days for interrogation in custody�, DIG Baruah said.
She specially thanked Ripul Das, SP, Udalguri, Nirmal Ghosh, SDPO, Bhergaon and Prasenjit Das, OC, Kalaigaon Police Station for solving the critical case in a very short time.
Requesting mediapersons to be careful when publishing sensitive news, the DIG BTAD said that imaginary or fake news could cause much harm to members of the society and help criminals avoid punishment in courts of law.
