Man assaults wife, teacher

GUWAHATI, Jan 24 - A cook working at a hotel in Meghalaya�s Nongpoh today attacked his wife and a teacher with a sharp weapon in the city injuring them grievously. The incident took place around 11.30 am today in Shantinagar area of Noonmati.

The accused, Ranjan Debnath (50), brutally assaulted a teacher of Maheswari Academy identified as Dinabandhu Das (35) at his residence. Debnath then came to his house and also attacked his wife Anju Debnath (30) with a sharp weapon. Police said Debnath later fled with a bottle of pesticide in his hand.

The injured persons have been shifted to a hospital.

Police suspect the accused might have fled to Meghalaya.

�We seized the weapon used in committing the crime. The pesticide bottle was also recovered. We are looking into all aspects. An extra marital affair cannot be ruled out, though there may be some other reason too,� Noonmati ACP Purabi Mazumdar said. An FIR has been lodged at Noonmati PS by a colleague of the victim teacher and a case has been registered under sections 447, 307, 326 of IPC.
