AIZAWL, April 2 - Aizawl Police have arrested a person for spreading fake news on the social media about 300 people from Mizoram attending the religious congregation at Nizamuddin in New Delhi.

In the wake of the spread of COVID-19 from the religious congregation, there was a social media post in Mizoram which claimed that 300 attendees of the Nizamuddin event were from Mizoram.

Within 24 hours of circulation of the fake news, the police arrested the accused on Wednesday.

However, names of several persons from Mizoram appeared in the list of digital footprints of those who were present near the mosque.

Officials said that everybody in the list had been traced and their throat swab samples would be sent for testing.

Though no COVID-19 case has been detected in Mizoram as yet, the State is on high alert as several people from neighbouring Assam who attended the religious congregation, have tested positive and many more are said to be hiding.
