JORHAT, Sept 16 - Dr Malinee Goswami, today took charge as the first Vice-Chancellor of the Assam Womens University (AWU) at Rowriah here.

Dr Goswami, former Head of the Department of Assamese, Gauhati University, was appointed to AWU VCs post by the State Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who is the Chancellor of the university, on September 12, by a Government notification issued by the Secretary, Government of Assam Higher Education (Technical) Department.

It may be mentioned here that the said appointment was overdue with the AWU celebrating its 6th foundation day on September 11.

Last year, students of the university came to the streets to protest the Governments lackadaisical attitude towards the AWU and an alleged plan to downgrade the university which led to the State Assembly witnessing uproarious scenes over the issue.
