Makum youths bid to generate employment

By Correspondent

TINSUKIA, Nov 6 In view of the growing demand for marigold flowers, especially during festivals and wedding ceremonies, four unemployed youths of Dighal Sako village at Barekuri, Makum, in Tinsukia district started a horticulture farm last year. The youths Biplob Chutia, Lakhindar Gohain, Bijoy Chutia and Nabakanta Chutia initially started farming different species of marigold under the banner of the Kauchin Dayabaddha Swabalombi Got.

As the demand has multiplied, they are now growing these flowers on two bighas of land. They spent an amount of Rs 30,000 on their own and during the last Diwali, they sold flowers valued at Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000. The daily demand for these flowers in the nearby towns, especially Tinsukia, has risen and there is also a shortage of markets.

In addition to the other members of their own families, these youths have also provided livelihood means to others on their farm. According to them, their horticultural activities will help generate self-employment avenues and stop the import of marigold flowers to the State from other parts of the country.
